Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Occurs also in American Spanish as medregal (20th cent., in dictionaries). N.E.D. (1904) enters as madregal, and gives the pronunciation as (mæ·drĭgæl) /ˈmædrɪɡæl/.
Any of various carangid fishes, esp. amberjacks of the genus Seriola.
