Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin medius.
Etymology: < classical Latin medius middle (see medium adj.), after mean n.3 9a.Latin medius is glossed as meane (see sense 1) in two 16th-cent. Latin-English dictionaries; one of these cites Pliny ( Nat. Hist. 10. 82): sonus medius, summus, imus, ‘the meane: the trebble: the base’. In fact Pliny uses the phrase to describe the range of the voice of a famous singer.
Music.
1. An intermediate vocal part in polyphonic music, often an alto or second (lower) treble part; = mean n.3 9a. Now historical.
