Etymology: < ancient Greek μάρμαρος marble (see marble n.) + -osis suffix. Hellenistic Greek or Byzantine Greek μαρμάροσις is attested only rarely and in (different) technical senses. Compare the later re-formation marmorosis n., and earlier post-classical Latin marmorisatio , French marmorisation (see marmorization n.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (māɹmărō^u·sis) /mɑːməˈrəʊsɪs/.
