单词 marmaric
释义

Marmaricadj.

Brit. /mɑːˈmarɪk/, U.S. /mɑrˈmɛrɪk/
Forms: late Middle English armoryk (transmission error), late Middle English Marmoryke, late Middle English–1500s Marmorike, 1500s Marmerike, 1500s–1700s Marmarick, 1600s Marmaricke, 1600s Marmatick (transmission error), 1700s– Marmaric.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Marmaricus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Marmaricus of or belonging to Marmarica, African < Hellenistic Greek Μαρμαρικός of or belonging to Marmarica, a region of North Africa between Egypt and Cyrenaica, probably < Μαρμαρ- , of unknown origin (perhaps < an African language) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare ancient Greek Μαρμαρίδαι (classical Latin Marmaridae), denoting the inhabitants of the region. Greek Μαρμαρική is not attested as a place name until the 4th cent.In antiquity Marmaricus leo probably had simply the general sense ‘African lion’. A number of passages imply by their metre that the word was stressed on the first syllable up to the mid 16th cent.: evidence from after that point consistently implies stress on the second syllable.
Of or belonging to the ancient region of Marmarica on the North African coast (now in eastern Libya, around Tobruk).
