Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French marly.
Etymology: < French †marly, marli type of fabric, embroidery work on this (1687 as marly, 1765 as marli), moulding on the circumference of a plate (1751 as marlie, 1812 as marli; compare plats à la Marly, 1698) < the name of Marly, now Marly-le-Roi, a village near Versailles where Louis XIV built an exceptionally sumptuous palace, whence the application of its name to various luxury items.With reference to the French textile sense, compare:1687 Le Mercure Galant in F. B. Palliser Hist. Lace (1865) xv. 201 (note) Marly..est un ouvrage à la mode, qui est une espèce de canevas de fine gaze vitrée, sur laquelle on fait un ouvrage à l'eguille avec un fil fort fin, lequel ouvrage est appelé Marly.
