Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < marl , contracted form of marble n. (compare marl n.4, marl n.5) + berry n.1 (compare later marbleberry n. at marble n. and adj. Compounds 2), or perhaps < marl n.1 + berry n.1
Chiefly U.S.
An evergreen shrub or small tree, Ardisia escallonioides (family Myrsinaceae), bearing white flowers and shiny black berries, and occurring in tropical and subtropical America (also †marlberry-cherry). Later also: a related shrub, A. japonica, native to Japan and China, with white flowers and pink fruits (rare).
