Etymology: < French mastigadour, although this apparently denotes a masticatory for a horse administered with a specially prepared bit (1664 in Solleysel: compare quot. c1721) < Portuguese mastigadouro (17th cent.) < mastigar chew ( < post-classical Latin masticare : see masticate v.) + -adouro -ator suffix. Compare masticatory n.

A straight bar snaffle used to control a horse when led to water; a slavering-bit. (Chiefly recorded in dictionaries.)In former times it was the practice to lead a horse to the watering trough from the stable, where water was not usually available. A curb bit prevented the horse getting its head in the trough or bucket, and the lower cheeks of the bit could catch on the sides of the trough, causing injury; a snaffle was therefore used. This was particularly important in the past when many male horses, and nearly all military horses, were left entire (i.e. uncastrated) and therefore of uncertain temperament.
