Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin materia prima.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin materia prima (in Tertullian and some subsequent, especially scholastic, texts; in alchemical texts from the 13th cent.) < classical Latin māteria matter n.1 + prīma , feminine singular of prīmus first (see prime adj.), after ancient Greek πρώτη ὕλη (in Aristotle; see hyle n.). Compare prima materia n.
A formless primordial substance regarded as the original material of the universe; fundamental matter. Also in extended use.
