1951 A. Fraser Sheep Husb. ii. 68 The Wensleydale..is pre-eminently a crossing breed... It provides sires to cross with the hill breeds of sheep indigenous to the North of England... The cross lambs thus produced are variously known as ‘Mashams’—Half-breds—or Greyfaces, and are very useful lambs for feeding on low ground.
