Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French mazelin (c1140), variant of mazerin, maserin cup or drinking vessel of maple wood (12th cent.), use as noun of maserin , adjective (12th cent.), either < mazer mazer n.¹ + -in -in suffix², or < a Germanic derivative of the base of mazer n.¹ (compare Middle Dutch māserijn (adjective) of maple wood). Compare post-classical Latin maserinus (11th cent.; also mazelinus). Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch s.v. maser claims that post-classical Latin maserinus is first attested in Venantius Fortunatus, but this appears to rest upon a misinterpretation of Du Cange s.v. mazer, mazerinus, where it is recorded that Fortunatus mentions maple-wood cups, although the word mazerinus is not in fact attested until later.
