Origin: A borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymon: Middle Low German māse.
Etymology: < Middle Low German māse spot, scar, cognate with Middle Dutch māse (Dutch †maas ), Old High German māsa (Middle High German māse , German †Mase , surviving in various forms in southern German dialects), probably < the base of mazer n.1 Compare masers n. and measles n.Quots 15271, 15272 are from a translation of a Low German text (compare also masers n.).
Obsolete. rare.
