1866 J. Lindley & T. Moore Treasury Bot. II. 724/1 Masdevallia, a considerable genus of South American orchids, of the tribe Malaxeæ, consisting of little epiphytes with creeping rootstocks, and broad leaves narrowed downwards into stalks.
1896 F. H. Woolward Genus Masdevallia 1 The first Masdevallia known to science was..discovered by the Spanish botanists, Ruiz and Pavon, in the Andes of Peru, during their residence in that country from 1777 to 1794.
