/ˈmɑːkɑː/, /ˈmɑːkə/, U.S. /ˈmɑrkə/ The principal monetary unit of Finland prior to the adoption of the euro (Euro n.2 1a) in January 1999, consisting of 100 penniä. Also: a coin or (occasionally) a banknote of this value.The markka was introduced in 1859. It was issued as a silver coin from 1864 until 1915, and thereafter as a base metal coin. In 1963 a currency reform revalued the markka as worth 100 old markkaa. The markka ceased to be legal tender in 2002, with the introduction of euro coins and banknotes.
