Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: master n.1, at prep., arms n.
Etymology: < master n.1 + at prep. (compare sense 15c at that entry) + the plural of arms n.
Nautical.
Originally: a warrant officer in the Royal Navy acting as chief police officer on board a warship, and also appointed to instruct the officers and crew in the use of small arms (a responsibility which disappeared after Royal Marines were embarked). Later: the first-class (subsequently: chief) petty officer responsible for enforcing discipline on board a naval ship; also applied to the officer having the same responsibility on a merchant vessel. See also marshal n. 5b, jaunty n.The master-at-arms is the only non-commissioned officer to wear a sword on formal occasions.
