Etymology: < French mascaret (1552 in Middle French as masquaret ) < Old Occitan (Gascon) mascaret spotted cow < mascar (adjective) black spotted (further etymology uncertain: see discussion at mask n.³) + -et -et suffix¹. Compare Old Occitan, Occitan mascarar (c1240), Old French mascurer (c1200), French mâchurer (Cotgrave, 1611) to daub, to black the face, Catalan mascara soot, black smear (end of 14th cent.), Portuguese mascarra stain, smut (16th cent.), mascarrar to daub, to smear (1813).For the transition in sense from ‘cow’ to ‘tidal bore’, compare French regional (Guyenne) rouart bull, rushing mass of water, and Occitan biou d'aigou violent torrent, literally ‘water-ox’.
