1. A festival of the Virgin Mary; esp. (a) the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August (Scottish regional in later use); (b) the Nativity of the Virgin, 8 September; = latter Marymass at latter adj. 2b(a). Obsolete.In quot. OE denoting the feast of Candlemas, 2 February. In quot. lOE (cf. also quots. a1200, 1577) with reference to the time between the feast of the Assumption and the feast of the Nativity.
