Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish mariscos, Portuguese mariscos.
Etymology: Partly < Spanish mariscos shellfish, plural of marisco (adjective) marine, (noun) seafood (both 14th cent.) < mar sea (see mere n.1) + -isco -esque suffix, and partly < Portuguese mariscos shellfish, plural of marisco (adjective) marine (12th cent.), (noun) seafood (13th cent.) < mar sea (see mere n.1) + -isco -esque suffix.
With plural agreement. In Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking countries: various kinds of shellfish prepared as a dish. Also attributive.
