Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin marisca.

Etymology: < classical Latin marisca haemorrhoid, inferior kind of fig (compare quot. 1655 at fig-dote n.), of unknown origin. With the transfer in sense compare classical Latin ficus fig, haemorrhoid (see ficus n.) and ancient Greek σῦκον fig, wart on the eyelids, in Hellenistic Greek also denoting various kinds of tumour (see sycon n.). Compare Middle French, French marisque variety of fig (1551), small anal tumour (c1740), haemorrhoid (1819). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mări·skă) /məˈrɪskə/.

Medicine. Obsolete.

Haemorrhoids, piles. Also: a fleshy growth on the eyes or eyelids.
