Etymology: < the name of Giovanni Battista Marini (1569–1625), Italian poet + -ism suffix, probably after Italian marinismo (1618) or French marinisme (1840). Compare earlier Marinist n. and adj.
The literary style characteristic of Marini, marked by extravagant imagery and wordplay, fashionable in 17th-cent. Italy.
