Etymology: < post-classical Latin marinarius (15th cent. in a British source as adjective; from 12th cent. as noun in sense ‘mariner’) < classical Latin marīnus marine adj. + -ārius -ary suffix1. In use as noun probably after post-classical Latin marinaria seamanship (1357 in a British source), use as noun of the feminine of marinarius.
