Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian marina.
Etymology: < Italian marina coastal region, port area, navy (in sense ‘coastal region’ from late 13th cent.) < post-classical Latin marina coastal region (late 6th or early 7th cent.), use as noun of feminine singular of classical Latin marīnus (see marine adj.); compare classical Latin marīna loca (neuter plural), lit. coastal places (Pliny). Compare also Spanish †marina seashore (mid 13th cent.), Old Occitan marina beach (13th cent.). Sense 2 is an English development ( > French marina, c1966).
1. That part of a coastal town, esp. a resort, which adjoins the sea; a port area; a seaside promenade or esplanade. Now rare.

Dyeing. Obsolete. rare.
Madder root that has been stored under soil for some months and then allowed to dry, used to produce a reddish-purple dye.
