Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mari- , mare , -genus , -ous suffix, -genous comb. form.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin mari-, mare sea (see mare n.4) + -genus (in e.g. indigenus : see indigenous adj. and n.) + -ous suffix. In later use independently < classical Latin mari- + -genous comb. form.Compare classical Latin terrigena , noun (see terrigenous adj.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mări·dʒĭnəs) /məˈrɪdʒɪnəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Produced in or by the sea.
