Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Martinisme.
Etymology: < French Martinisme (1785) < the name either of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin (see below) or of Martinez Pasqualis (see below) + -isme -ism suffix, after Martiniste Martinist n.4
The cabalistic and gnostic offshoot from Christian philosophy devised by Martinez Pasqualis (1715–99), Portuguese mystic and philosopher, and developed by his disciple Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin (1743–1803), which teaches a variety of mystical pantheism, regarding the world as an emanation from the Almighty.
