单词 margaric
释义

margaricadj.

Brit. /mɑːˈɡarɪk/, U.S. /mɑrˈɡɛrɪk/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French margarique.
Etymology: < French margarique (in acide margarique : M. E. Chevreul 1816, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 2 346) < margar- (in margarine margarin n.) + -ique -ic suffix.
Chemistry.
1. margaric acid n.
a. A substance with the supposed formula C17H34O2, formerly believed to be one of the three fatty acids whose glyceryl derivatives (olein, margarin, stearin) form the chief constituents of animal fat. Now historical. It was shown by Heintz in 1852 ( Jrnl. f. Prakt. Chem. 66 1) that the margaric acid of Chevreul was really a mixture of palmitic acid, C16H32O2, and stearic acid, C18H36O2. In this use the name is now obsolete, though its former prevalence is commemorated in the names margarine and oleo-margarine.
