Etymology: < Swahili manamba (singular and plural, but often used in plural) indentured labourer, low-paid or casual worker, ticket tout for a transport service (mid 20th cent. or earlier), apparently < manamba (plural) numbers (1910 or earlier; < ma- , plural class prefix + -namba ; < English number n.), although the semantic motivation is unclear.
