Etymology: Probably < man n.¹ (perhaps in the Caribbean sense ‘extremely strong’: the plant is very hard to pull up) + grass n.¹ Compare mangrasi, the name of this plant in Suriname.The first element has been compared with mand n.², but it is unlikely that a Hindi loanword would have been used on Barbados in 1672. Quot. 1672 may result from confusion between this word and mangrove tree.
