Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian mannaja krupa.
Etymology: < Russian mannaja krupa semolina (lit. ‘manna groats’) < Old Russian mana food, manna + krup″ fine meal (cognate with reof adj.); similar forms exist in most Slavonic languages as well as non-Slavonic languages spoken in Eastern Europe, e.g. Lithuanian manų kruopos , Estonian mannatangud (tangud groats). Compare German Mannagrütze < Manna manna n.1 + Grütze grit n.2

1. Coarser grains left behind after the separation of finer flour from meal, used for making puddings, soups, etc. Cf. semolina n. Obsolete.

1889 G. S. Boulger Uses of Plants i. i. 34 Manna Croup is the ‘groats’, or decorticated and partly crushed grains, of Glyceria fluitans, R.Br., a common grass, imported in small quantities from Russia, especially Poland.
1974 F. N. Howes Dict. Useful & Everyday Plants 157 Manna croup, preparation once made in parts of Eur. from the seeds of floating sweet grass or manna grass, Glyceria fluitans, and used as food.
