Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < manjak n. (perhaps after man jack in the phrase every man jack n. at man n.¹ 21), with reference to the consistency of the pulp of the berries.The Dict. Caribbean Eng. Usage (1996) suggests a connection with Guarani mangaisi gummy sap extracted from the mangavi tree and other resinous trees; but neither the form nor the sense match well.

Any of several West Indian trees of the genus Cordia (family Boraginaceae), characterized by mucilaginous fruit; also manjack tree. Also called clammy cherry.
