Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: manjak n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < manjak n. (perhaps after man jack in the phrase every man jack n. at man n.1 21), with reference to the consistency of the pulp of the berries.The Dict. Caribbean Eng. Usage (1996) suggests a connection with Guarani mangaisi gummy sap extracted from the mangavi tree and other resinous trees; but neither the form nor the sense match well.
Any of several West Indian trees of the genus Cordia (family Boraginaceae), characterized by mucilaginous fruit; also manjack tree. Also called clammy cherry.
