Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymons: Hindi maṭar, Panjabi maṭṭar.
Etymology: < Hindi maṭar, Panjabi maṭṭar pea, chickling vetch; perhaps (with reference to chickling vetch) related to Tamil maṭṭai inferior person or thing. Compare:1832 W. Roxburgh et al. Flora Indica (new ed.) III. 321 P[isum] sativum... Hind. and Beng. Mutur, the Patna or common white field pea, and Choota Mutur a small, round greenish variety of the common gray field pea.1858 P. L. Simmonds Dict. Trade Products Muthar, Mutter, an Indian name for pease.
1. In South Asia: the chickling vetch ( Lathyrus sativus). Also in plural.
