Etymology: < Japanese matsuri festival, feast (8th cent.; 1603 as matçuri in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), nominalized stem of matsuru to worship.
Shinto.
In Japan: a festival celebrated at a Shinto shrine; (more generally) any traditional local festival. Later also: a Japanese festival celebrated in a country other than Japan.
