Etymology: < German Mast fattening (see mast n.2) + cell n.1, after German Mastzelle (P. Ehrlich Beitr. zur Theorie u. Praxis der Histol. Färbung (Leipzig doctoral thesis, 1878), and in Arch. f. Physiol. (1879) 3 169) < Mast fattening + Zelle cell n.1For Ehrlich's explanation of his adoption of the term, see the following:1879 Arch. f. Physiol. 3 169 Man kann..die granulirten Zellen gewissermaassen als Producte der Mästung der Bindegewebszellen ansehen und sie dem entsprechend als Mastzellen bezeichnen.
Physiology.
A cell filled with metachromatic granules, which is derived from a stem cell in bone marrow and occurs in connective tissue, where it releases histamine, heparin, and other substances during allergic and inflammatory reactions.
