Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Spanish. Or (ii) a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish mazmorra; Portuguese masmorra.

Etymology: Probably < Spanish mazmorra dungeon (1495) or Portuguese masmorra (15th cent.; also matamorra ) < Arabic maṭmūra (see mattamore n.). Compare earlier mizmore n.Alternatively a Celtic etymology could perhaps be sought < an unattested compound of Scottish Gaelic màs bottom, hip (compare Early Irish más(s) bottom, base, buttock, tentatively related to mass mass, ingot < classical Latin massa lump, bulk, mass n.²) and mór great (compare claymore n., mormaer n.).

The dungeon of a castle.Perhaps originally applied specifically to the dungeon of Crichton Castle, Midlothian. The term appears to have gained wider currency through its use by Sir Walter Scott.
