Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French marc.
Etymology: < Middle French, French marc (c1380) < the base of marcher march v.2 in the sense ‘to crush, trample’. Compare murk n.2The c in the French word is mute, even before a vowel; hence probably the 17th-cent. English forms marre, mare.
1. The refuse remaining after the extraction of juice, etc., from fruit or other plant material; spec. that resulting from the pressing of grapes. Also with distinguishing word.
