Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: manu- comb. form, tension n.
Etymology: < manu- comb. form + tension n., the sense ‘holding’ rather than ‘stretching’ being after classical Latin tenēre to hold, restrain (past participial stem tent-), rather than the actual etymon tendere to extend.
Obsolete. rare.
The action of holding or restraining a person by hand.
