单词 manucode
释义

manucoden.

Brit. /ˈmanjᵿkəʊd/, U.S. /ˈmænjəˌkoʊd/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manucode.
Etymology: < French manucode (Buffon & P. Guénau de Montbeillard Hist. nat. des oiseaux (1775) III. 163) < post-classical Latin manucodiata manucodiata n.
A bird of paradise; spec. any of several blue-black birds belonging (or formerly belonging) to the genus Manucodia of New Guinea, of which the male and female are similar and breed as stable pairs; esp. (more fully trumpet manucode) the trumpet bird, M. (or Phonygammus) keraudrenii, which also occurs in Queensland, Australia. The French manucode was originally applied to all the birds of the former genus Manucodiata, which was adopted by Brisson (Ornithologie (1760) II. 130) and was equivalent to the Paradisea of Linnaeus, and in this use was occasionally employed by English writers. The genus name Manucodia (perhaps a misprint for Manucodiata) was used by Boddaert (1783) in describing a species since discovered to belong to a distinct genus, for which English ornithologists adopted Boddaert's name. In English manucode was then restricted to the birds of this genus, one of which is now sometimes placed in another genus, Phonygammus.
