Etymology: < classical Latin manubiālis obtained from the sale of booty (one attestation, in Suetonius) < manubiae the general's share of booty or the money obtained from its sale, prize-money (probably < manus hand (see manus n.1) + a form related to habēre to have: see habit n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. The English word may be directly < classical Latin manubiae + -al suffix1. Compare earlier manubiary adj.
