Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manuballista.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin manuballista kind of light siege engine (4th cent. in Vegetius) < classical Latin manus hand (see manus n.1) + ballista ballista n., perhaps after arcuballista arbalest n.
rare. Now historical.
A kind of light siege engine in the form of a large crossbow or arbalest mounted on a cart or the like, used for throwing small missiles. Also: †a person operating such a siege engine (obsolete).
