Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manuārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin manuārius operated by hand (one isolated attestation; in post-classical Latin also ‘performed by hand’ (from 1531 in British sources) and (as noun) ‘workman’) < manus hand (see manus n.1) + -ārius -ary suffix1. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·niuări) /ˈmænjuːərɪ/ (see manu- comb. form).

1. An indulgence given for touching a sacred relic.Apparently an isolated use. [In quot. translating post-classical Latin manuarias, adjective, modifying indulgentias indulgences. N.E.D. (1905) notes that attempts to interpret the English of this passage without reference to the Latin have given rise to ‘An alleged sense “consecrated glove” given in recent Dict[ionarie]s’.]
