Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu maḥmūdī.
Etymology: < Urdu maḥmūdī specifying a sort of muslin, probably originally because of its concentration in central U.P., India, and especially in Mamudi near Hardoi (named after a local ruler Maḥmūd).Compare:1903 G. Watt Indian Art at Delhi 288 In the United Provinces the towns of..Mahmudnagar in Lucknow..Mamudi in Hardoi..are famous for their plain, striped and flowered muslins. The forms in -s were probably originally plural, but understood as non-count singular. Different spellings seem sometimes to have been taken to denote distinct textiles: see quot. 1937.
Now rare.
A plain muslin woven in India and Persia (now Iran).
