单词 mammee
释义

mammeen.

Brit. /ˈmami/, U.S. /ˈmæmi/
Forms: 1500s mamea, 1500s mameia, 1500s mamio, 1500s 2000s– mamey, 1600s mamay, 1600s mamayn, 1600s mamei, 1600s mamin, 1600s mammet, 1600s momin, 1600s–1800s mamme, 1600s– mamee, 1600s– mammee, 1700s– mamie, 1800s mami, 1800s mammey, 1800s maumee, 1800s– mammy, 1900s– mammie.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mamey.
Etymology: < Spanish mamey (1519 as mameis), probably from an indigenous American language. Compare post-classical Latin Mammea (1510 in Peter Martyr of Angleria), scientific Latin Mammea, genus name (adopted by Linnaeus in his Genera Plantarum (1737) 344, after earlier Mammei (C. Plumier Nova Plantarum Amer. Genera (1703) 4)); also French mamey, mammée (1858). Several forms appear to be after mammy n., perhaps by folk etymology; compare:1976 C. Eneas Bain Town 8 I now believe that this tree and its fruit got their name from the apparent likeness of the fruit to a well-formed mammary gland of a well-developed black female.
1. A large tree, Mammea americana (family Clusiaceae ( Guttiferae)), native to the Caribbean and widely cultivated in tropical America; the large edible fruit of this tree, which has a sweet, yellow, aromatic flesh.
