单词 manifestarian
释义

Manifestariann.adj.

Brit. /ˌmanᵻfɛˈstɛːrɪən/, U.S. /ˈmænəˌfɛsˈtɛriən/
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: manifest v., -arian suffix.
Etymology: Precise etymology uncertain: probably < manifest v. + -arian suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Manifestarius (1569), French manifestaire (1694), Spanish manifestario denoting a member of a Prussian Anabaptist sect, apparently so called on account of their willingness to testify openly to their religious beliefs.
Now historical.
A. n.
1. A member of a radical Arminian sect, led by the preacher Thomas Moor (or Moore), which flourished in Lincolnshire and Norfolk in the mid 17th cent., and was characterized by a rejection of liturgical fast and thanksgiving and a belief in the ability of certain members to see Christ and the Devil as physical presences.
