Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Manichaeus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Manichaeus (4th cent.) < Byzantine Greek Μανιχαῖος Manichaean (4th cent.) < from the name of Mani (Hellenized to Μάνης , a common name for slaves, and to Μανιχαῖος , allegedly (as recorded by St Augustine) to avoid the resemblance between Mani and μανία mania n.), Iranian founder of a religious system ( a.d. 216c276): see Manichaeism n. Compare Middle French Manichee, plural (1575).
An adherent of Manichaeism; (more generally) a dualist.
