Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French malvesey.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman malvesey, malvesie, malvoisin, Middle French malvoisie a kind of sweet wine originally from Greece (14th cent.) < Italian malvasia malvasia n. Subsequently in French in senses ‘wine from Provence’ (1690), ‘sweet wine (of whatever origin)’ (1694), and as the name of several varieties of grape (1701). Compare post-classical Latin malveseye , malveseia , malavisee (from 1368 in British sources). Compare malmsey n.With β. forms (also Anglo-Norman vin de malvoisin, Middle High German wīn von Malvasīn) compare post-classical Latin vinum malvasinum.
