Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Spanish marabuto (1599–1604, in the text of which quot. 1622 is a translation), partly (ii) < Italian marabotto (1607), marabuto (1614; compare quot. 1659), and partly (iii) < French marabut (1620, also in a translation of Alemán), all apparently < Arabic murābiṭ marabout n.The word appeared in the Mediterranean in the late 16th cent., being absent from earlier European galley terminology; it was probably introduced into nautical use through the Lingua Franca, though whether the nautical sense was borrowed < Arabic or developed in the European languages is unknown.

Originally: one of the lateen sails of the mainmast of a Mediterranean galley. Later, more generally: a lateen sail (see quot. 1659).
