Designating extinct hominids of the genera Australopithecus, Paranthropus, and related forms, which are commonly thought of as ‘apemen’ (cf. apeman n. 2); of or relating to such hominids.For a time treated as a separate subfamily ( Australopithecinae), the australopithecines are now usually placed in the subtribe Hominina along with humans and chimpanzees.
