Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maquillage.
Etymology: < French maquillage making-up, make-up (1858 in theatrical use; 1628 in sense ‘work’) < maquiller to make up one's face (c1840 in theatrical use; in Middle French with sense ‘to work, to do’ (1455), in Old French (Picardy) as maquier to do (13th cent.) < Middle Dutch māken make v.1) + -age -age suffix.
Make-up, cosmetics; the application of make-up (esp. in a heavy or theatrical fashion). Also in extended use.
