Etymology: < Mexican Spanish maquila < maquilar to assemble (1734 in Castilian Spanish in sense ‘to mill’) < maquila miller's portion (1020), probably < Arabic makīl, masculine, makīla, feminine ‘(something) measured’, passive participle of kāla to measure.
