Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manica.
Etymology: < classical Latin manica long sleeve (usually in plural in classical Latin; also in senses ‘handcuffs, manacles’, and denoting other kinds of coverings of the hands and forearms), feminine noun formation < manus hand (see manus n.1) + -cus, suffix forming adjectives (no corresponding adjective is attested; similarly pedica (foot) shackle, fetter). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·nikă) /ˈmænɪkə/.
Obsolete.
