Etymology: < manic adj. + depressive adj. and n., after German manisch-depressiv ( E. Kraepelin Psychiatrie (ed. 6, 1899) II. ix. 359). Compare French maniaque-dépressif (1900 as adjective, 1907 as noun), maniaco-dépressif (1901 as adjective).

Designating a form of mental illness characterized by one or more episodes of mania typically accompanied by one or more episodes of major depression (now often called bipolar disorder); affected with this disorder; characteristic or symptomatic of this disorder. Also figurative.
