Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: mange n.
Etymology: Probably originally < the disyllabic (α) form of mange n. (see note at that entry; compare mange adj.); subsequently apprehended as < mange n. + -y suffix1 (compare manged adj.1).The adjective in its earlier form in -ew(e) is attested only in the Master of Game; its existence is implied also by the derivative maniewenesse (see manginess n.) in the same source.
